Captiva Island Florida

North Captiva, also known as Upper Captiva, is an unspoiled tropical paradise on Florida’s southwest coast. Captiva Island is located near Fort Myers on Florida’s Gulf Coast and is often associated with neighboring Sanibel Island to the south. Due to Captiva’s proximity to Sanibel Island, visitors can easily access everything Sanibel has to offer. Like Sanibel, Captiva is a barrier island on the Isle of Pines (east of Captiva, north of Sanibel), but Captiva is narrower.

Captiva is accessible via a small bridge that crosses the Blind Pass from Sanibel Island. Captiva Island, the sister island of the larger Sanibel Island, is located directly above the small bridge that spans over Turner Beach. Captiva Drive is the main road on the island, running from the city centre in the south to the Blind Access Bridge to Sanibel Island. A small area called Captiva Village is located at the northern end of Captiva Road, just in front of the entrance to the South Sea Island Resort and Yacht Club.

Explore Captiva Island by rolling around and dreaming of big houses on the shore, and go explore small corners of the beach, especially Blind Beach, which is located at the intersection of Sanibel and Captiva Islands. South Seas Resort is a charming hotel located at the intersection of Sanibel and Captiva Islands. From parasailing in the Gulf of Mexico to leisurely kayaking in Pine Island Sound, the 330-acre South Seas Island Resort, with its beaches and mangroves, is ideal for water sports.

Fishing is another option, and Southsea Island Resort or Sunny Isles Adventures offer a variety of excursions. Royal Shell and Captiva Island Vacation Rentals are two great options for a variety of large and small rentals, some of which will be in tourist properties like South Seas Resort. Choosing to rent on Captiva Island is a matter of preference, your choice depends on personal preference and factors such as proximity to the beach, budget and location.

Captiva Island is so close to Sanibel that visiting their famous beaches is a hop and hop and hop apart. Sanibel Island and Captiva Island in Florida are perfect vacation choices, whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a family getaway, or the outdoors. When it comes to accommodations on these popular Southwest Florida islands, the biggest question we get asked is what are the biggest differences between the two islands.

The waters of southwest Florida are dotted with islands that can only be reached by boat, including Cayo Costa State Park. A true gem, this pristine island has stunningly beautiful long white sand beaches and is home to some of the most interesting shell baths. Its marina welcomes boaters and is the starting point for the Captiva Cruises fleet, which takes visitors to Useppa Island, Cabbage Key, and Cayo Costa State Park, as well as dolphin watching and sunset cruises.

These include eco-friendly kayaking tours, day trips and boat trips to nearby Useppa and Cubbage Key islands, where Jimmy Buffett may have been the inspiration for the heavenly cheeseburger. Famous guests on the island include Theodore Roosevelt who fished there, Charles Lindbergh (who often landed his plane on the beach in front of the Twain Waters Inn), Ann Morrow Lindbergh and J.N. The area sees trails of Caloosa Indians large and small, from the Pinewood Caloosa Heritage Trail to the Mound Museum in Fort Myers Beach (across the water from nearby Sanibel Island).

The barrier islands surrounding Fort Myers, including Captiva and neighboring Sanibel Island near Sanibel Island, were once home to the Calusa Indians. The island is slightly off the beaten track than its sister island, Sanibel. It has now been fully restored after a $140 million renovation and is the backbone of the island’s tourism economy.

Captiva was originally part of nearby Sanibel Island to the southeast, and was disrupted in 1926 when a wave of hurricanes created a new passage blind. Captivity Island, North Captivity Island, and Sanibel Island merged until a major hurricane separated them, creating a new shipping lane known as the Blind Lane in the Gulf of Mexico. Island legend… Once upon a time there was an island, North Captiva and Captiva was a chain of beautiful beaches.

In addition, the cruise passes North Captiva, which is mostly underdeveloped, as is Pine Island. Captiva Drive runs east-west through the village and connects the Pine Island Sound boat docks to the white sand beach of the Gulf of Mexico. Redfish Pass, which connects the Gulf of Mexico to Pine Island Sound at the northern tip of Captiva Island in the Gulf of Mexico, is a popular destination for anglers due to Redfish Pass’s abundance of fish such as snook, bass, and sea trout.

Captiva has two public beaches, Turner Beach on the south end and Alison Hagerup Beach Park on the north end. Half of the island is privately owned, with Millionaires Street, luxury bayfront homes, and Captiva Drive bay.

Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation – Visit the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation Nature Center to learn about the island’s ecosystems on a 4.5-mile trail. Shop the island’s souvenir shops and visit the nearby islands of Captiva, Cubbage Key, Sanibel, Cayo Costa or Boca Grande. Fishing from the beach can also be productive, but if you want to go out to sea and don’t have a boat, you can rent one, or better yet, hire an experienced fishing guide to sail the waters of the Captiva Islands. Even before the pandemic caused many to be wary of crowds and seek shelter in natural and spacious places, Captive Island, with a population of less than 200 people, has long been an escape from the hustle and bustle on the Gulf Coast.
